African Solutions to African Problems

Supports community-based programs and women’s networks to help them better deliver life-affirming care for orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

South Africa has the highest number of HIV-positive people in all of Africa. As the pandemic matures, the number of children infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS rises to staggering heights, placing an ever-increasing burden on the poorest of communities.

african-solutions-photo1African Solution to African Problems (ASAP) has a decade of experience of working in isolated, deeply rural, South African communities which have been overwhelmed by the catastrophic affects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.  We have a well-established drop-in center model that we have replicated in a number of communities to provide a wide range of integrated services that enable communities to care for orphans and vulnerable children.

ASAP works closely with carefully selected women’s groups that currently provide services to more than 13,000 children and 700 child caregivers through multi-faceted programs.  These programs include building centers where services are delivered to children, establishing organic food gardens to improve the nutrition of children, providing financial support to keep children in schools, facilitating access to health care and health care training for children and their carers, initiating psychosocial support interventions for children, youth and child caregivers, strengthening communities through youth development and library projects, and providing on-going training for the women who run the centers to build their expertise in all areas of their work, including project management and financial oversight.

At the heart of our approach is working with the women to understand how best we can help them to improve their services, develop sustainable organizations, expand their reach to more children,  and achieve their community development goals.
